Top Exam tips
Underline command wordsRead each question twice and underline command words in the questions. If you are asked to evaluate or give a criticism write the word 'weaknesses.' If you are asked to describe or explain give key details. Be careful to spot when asked for theory or study.
|
Identify the sectionThe exam board will only ask you questions from one of the 5 headings: Key concepts, Core Theory and criticisms, Alternative Theory, Core Study and criticisms and Application.
When you read each question identify which of the 5 headings it is asking for information from. Apply the information from that section to the exam question. This will ensure that you are answering the question asked. Remember to use the context of the study or theory. |
10 mark exam answersYou will have to answer two 10 mark exam answers. They can be on a theory or a study.
5 marks are available for how you have described the theory or study. If describing a study remember to refer to the aim, method, procedure, results and conclusion. Including sample and any variables. 5 marks are available for evaluation. You need to use a P.E. paragraph. Identify the weakness and explain WHY is it a weakness of this theory or in this study. You need to give 3 weaknesses as a minimum. |
"Don't become a mere recorder of facts, but try to penetrate the mystery of their origin"
- Ivan Pavlov
Planning an investigation in the exam
In Section B of the research methods exam you are required to plan your own investigation. You should spend at least 5 minutes planning this.
Use the following model to help you plan: WHO - This includes the sample and sampling method. E.g. 10 females and 10 males using opportunity sampling WHAT - This is the method used and design if applicable. E.g. Lab experiment, independent measures design. WHERE - This includes the location of your research. E.g. Cheshunt School in classroom 120. WHEN - This includes a rough time and day for your research. E.g. Tuesday period 5. HOW - This includes a step by step outline of what you intend to do. E.g. Participants are given a questionnaire with 10 open and closed questions. They will be 10 minutes to complete the questionnaire in silence. |
Top exam tips
Use the source in your answerHighlight or underline key words / information in the source at the beginning of section A and section B. Write the word 'context' at the top of every page and identify the variables. Make sure you refer to the variables in every answer.
|
Underline words in the questionUnderline words in the questions to make sure that you know what they are about. Write words above the question to help you answer it. For example, above independent variable write the word 'change' and above dependent variable write the word 'measure'.
|
Learn strengths and weaknessesLearn the definitions and strengths and weaknesses of the different research methods, then in the exam just apply them to the context of the source given.
